Description
It took me 10 days to carve this 10 foot tall sand sculpture for Sandland 2008. This scene depicts the Yankee Gale, a storm during the 1850's off the Atlantic coast that decimated the US fishing fleet. Some 100 schooners and 700 sailors were battered and swept by the storm and then smashed along the Prince Edward Island Coast. The "Flirt" was a boat that was destroyed with all hands lost.
This piece was so hard to do, since I had very little experience as a figurative artist. Luckily there was 7 other sculptors to give me pointers and criticisms. I got a eye lesson from David Ducharme, buttocks anatomy tips from Alexi, Peter Vogellar's advice and feedback was crucial (he also did the lettering), and Ilya's contributed sail tips . I made faces in the mirror to find the right expression.
